About the Role
This is a strategic, hands-on leadership role at the intersection of gaming and education. You’ll be the foundational Ruby engineer at Boddle Learning, taking ownership of our Ruby on Rails infrastructure and shaping the technical direction of our platform. In this role, you won’t just build features—you’ll build a team around you, setting the standard for how we scale our Ruby expertise and collaborate across functions.

You’ll ensure our platform is secure, performant, and continuously evolving to meet the needs of millions of students and teachers. Beyond coding, you’ll be a thought partner for our leadership team, mentor future hires, and collaborate to align technical decisions with our mission.

Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable Ruby on Rails applications that power the Boddle platform.
- Provide technical leadership across our engineering function, setting standards for code quality, security, and reliability.
- Lead feature development and enhancements, working closely with designers, product managers, and game developers to bring ideas to life.
- Manage and optimize database schemas, queries, and performance (PostgreSQL/MySQL), ensuring a seamless experience for users.
- Integrate caching (Redis/Memcached), queuing systems (Sidekiq/Resque), and third-party services to maximize application performance.
- Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from planning and architecture to testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
- Implement robust logging, monitoring, and debugging strategies using tools like New Relic, DataDog, and Sentry.
- Help shape the recruitment and mentorship of additional Ruby developers to grow the team around you.
- Contribute to infrastructure and DevOps efforts (AWS, CI/CD), ensuring our systems are reliable, secure, and future-ready.
- Continuously explore new technologies and approaches that can improve the gaming and learning experience for our users.

Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 4 years in a senior or technical lead role.
- 5+ years of hands-on Ruby on Rails development, with experience architecting and scaling complex applications.
- Expertise in front-end technologies (JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3) and UI/JS libraries (Chart.js, Highcharts, jsPDF).
- Strong understanding of database optimization, performance tuning, and large-scale data handling.
- Proficiency with testing frameworks (RSpec, MiniTest), CI/CD practices, and cloud services (AWS preferred).
- Experience with high-traffic, data-driven applications; gaming or interactive web app experience is a plus.
- Excellent communicator and collaborator, able to work seamlessly across teams and functions.
- A proactive mindset with a passion for driving innovation and aligning technical work to mission-driven outcomes.
